Sophia's Blog

Manifestation is about aligning your subconscious beliefs with your conscious desires. When you do, nothing can hold you back from achieving your goals. This is the arena in which I play.

Do this instead of calories in and calories out!

If you want sustainable weight loss, here's a simple alternative to counting calories and kilojoules. A calorie or kilojoule is a symbol for a unit of energy. The idea of calories-in, calories-out stems from the misunderstanding that we eat and burn energy in equal amounts. It is untrue. Apart from the tedious nature of counting calories and kilojoules over long periods (even with an app), your body needs much more than energy to survive and thrive.

Dr Mark Hyman, author, founder and medical director of The Ultrawellness Centre, writes: 'Food is information and literally talks to your genes and controls gene expression, hormones and metabolism. What you eat has the potential to determine if you will develop a disease or gain weight.' Read more ...

I cringe when I see headlines for quick weight loss.

I cringe when I see the headlines like this: Lose 20 lbs in 90 Days. Anybody can experience rapid weight loss, but what usually happens next is as time passes, you regain the 'lost' weight and then some. What's the point of that?  I am not interested in 30-day, 90-day, or 120-day results. What interests me is where you'll be two years from now. I want to set you up for success in 5, 10, 20 years and longer. What I care about is sustainable health and vitality. My role is to help you set yourself up for long-term success. My vision is for you to enjoy sustainable weight loss without dieting or feelings of deprivation!

How do you love to move your body? What movement feels good to you? There’s no denying it, your body wants to move. When you move your body every day, you think more clearly.

You sleep more soundly and feel better about yourself and your life. Watch small children playing. Children run, jump, skip, hop, climb, crawl, roll, dance, and frolic all over the place. When you were a small child, you loved to move your body! You broke into a sweat without hesitation.

Do you remember the joy of playing tiggy in the schoolyard during morning tea? Did you race around the oval with your friends during lunch break? Read more ...

The Power of Your Vocabulary

When we talk about losing weight, we set ourselves up for failure. It is because we associate loss with pain, and most of the things we lose, we seek to find again!

We can lose our: Mojo, job, hair, health, driver's licence, wallet, mobility, car keys, eyesight, home, hearing, fortune, identity, partner, purpose, credit cards, sanity, direction, children, love of your life, livelihood, best friend, savings, credibility, or life. Every one of these losses is painful.

Your mind is confused when you say you have lost weight. Your mind associates loss with pain and seeks to move you away from pain towards pleasure. Pleasure is associated with finding lost things. Read more ...

How to Lose Weight and Keep It Off

Repeatedly losing and regaining weight can be disheartening. You may wonder: Will I ever lose weight and keep it off? For 35 years, I prayed: Please help me to get slim and stay slim!

I tried one diet after another. I lost weight and regained it more times than I can recall. I had no idea what I was doing wrong. Why did other women eat whatever they wanted without gaining weight? It infuriated me! Now, at age 53, I am one of those women who can eat whatever she wants without gaining weight. Because at age 47, I finally figured it out. Read more ...

Let's Celebrate Women Ageing

I have a big vision for 2023. If I said it didn't scare me, I'd be lying. At age 53 and a half, procrastination is unacceptable. I am more acutely aware of the value of time now than before I turned half a century.

I am also aware of the value of my life experience. I have a humble desire to share the lessons I have learned and the skills I have mastered.

Honestly, I am struggling with the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. As the collagen levels in my body decrease and the effects of gravity show up on my skin, I start feeling self-conscious on camera all over again. Read more ...

Don't Wait for Weight Loss

Do you tell yourself a story about all the exciting things you will do when you lose weight? I did!

When I lose weight, then I'll have a photoshoot.

When I lose weight, then I'll date again.

When I lose weight, then I'll - fill in the blank.

Carrying excess weight can provide a handy excuse for shying away from taking action that scares you. You don't consciously choose it. It's a subconscious program running under the surface of your awareness. Read more ...

ENOUGH with this Nonsense!

Yo-yo dieting is no way to live. It steals your attention from everything that truly matters! I say ENOUGH with this nonsense! It's time to take back your power and reprogram your mind for life-long radiant health and vitality.

In an interview with Lewis Howes, Dr Bruce Lipton, author of The Biology of Belief, said, "95% of our life is not coming from wishes and desires. It's coming from (subconscious) programs that came from other people. You don't see it when it's happening because 65-70% of those programs are disempowering!" Healing and transformation happen below the surface level of your conscious awareness where your programming resides. That is why hypnosis is one of my favourite tools for reprogramming your mind. It Feels Good To Lose Excess Weight

Defending, explaining, and justifying why you want to ditch unwanted weight, change your body size and shape, or create new eating and exercise habits, keeps you stuck. It redirects your focus to the needs of someone else instead of your own.

When I was secretly battling binge eating, nobody knew. I was so ashamed of my behaviour that I hid it. I didn’t want to confess to anyone that I was out of control around food. Most evenings, I hid in the kitchen pantry, cramming my mouth with handfuls of bread, biscuits, ice cream, and whatever was readily available until I felt sick. For many years, binge eating wasn’t a recognised disorder. I didn’t know what was wrong with me. I only knew that something was not quite right. Read more ...

Focus On Your Desired Outcome

Your present reality is an old news story. It is the result of the thoughts you habitually think, a.k.a. your beliefs. You can create permanent changes in your behaviour around food and exercise by updating your habitual patterns of thought and feeling. When you change on the mental plane of your subconscious, you experience different results in the physical plane.

One of the comments I repeatedly hear from my clients is: "This is so easy, Sophia! The weight is coming off. I'm not even thinking about what I eat. And I'm moving my body more." Yes, it is easy to change when you learn how to recode your mind. Read more ...

You Can Change, Even After A Lifetime

I had a lifetime of feeling uncomfortable in my body, frustrated about my eating habits and defeated by my inability to lose unwanted weight. When I found a way to change my eating habits at age 47, I thought it was too good to be true. I tested it. I waited five years. Would this last? Would I stay the size and shape I loved? Would my confidence levels stabilise?

It's been more than five years now. My weight has stabilised. I love my body size and shape. I feel relaxed in my body. I feel confident in myself. I enjoy exploring a range of physical activities. I move my body daily. Best of all, I feel 100% comfortable around food. I TRUST MYSELF. I trust myself to make healthy choices consistently. And I do. Read more ...

You Are Attractive As You Are

I want you to know something important: You will not become more loveable, attractive or worthy when you change your body weight, size or shape.

I hesitated to share my knowledge and skills around weight loss for several years because I was scared of making women feel even more uncomfortable about their body weight, size, and shape. After I recovered from a lifetime of secret struggle with my weight, the last thing I wanted to talk about was weight loss!

Are You Tired of Yo-yo Dieting?

What are your thoughts when you look in the fitting room mirror of your favourite clothing store? Ugh! Seeing my reflection would bring my mood down!

I’d diet. The excess weight came off, and I felt more confident in my body. It didn’t last long. Perhaps a few weeks or a few months at most. After a while, I was tired of restricting myself and began having a bite of this and a bite of that. I’d sneak in an extra serving of dinner or a little snack. I felt jealous watching other women, thinner than me, eating the foods I was not allowing myself to eat.

Before all the excess weight piled back on again, I would decide to go clothes shopping. Entering the store, I confidently gathered several garments and headed to the fitting room. Read more ...

Exit the Clean-your-plate Club

When you sit down to a meal, do you eat everything on your plate whether you are hungry or not? For years I found myself eating everything on my plate by habit. Even when I was no longer hungry, I struggled to push the remaining food aside. Many of my clients share this story. It can be a difficult habit to break.

When you were a small child, were you allowed to eat whatever you wanted, whenever you wanted? It is unlikely you had the autonomy you have now. You came onto the planet with the perfect appetite. You were in tune with your body. You knew when you were hungry. You cried for food regardless of the time of day or night. And when you were full, you pursed your lips and turned your head away.

Where Do Your Habits Come From?

When it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, you probably know what to do but struggle to do it consistently. Here’s why: Researchers estimate that of the 50–70,000 thoughts you think each day, 80–90% are the same thoughts you thought the day before. Your mind loves what is familiar.

Thanks to the study of neuroplasticity, science reveals you can rewire your brain at any age. This is excellent news! It means you can replace the habits of thought that harm you with habits that heal you.

Your thoughts lead to feelings. Your feelings lead to action. And the action you take consistently leads to results. To experience a different result, you must change how habitually think. If only it were easy! Well, it can be. Read more ...

Stop Trying to Lose Weight

When I heard Marisa Peer say, “Trying is very trying,”  I was perplexed. What on earth did she mean by that? Then I began to tune in to my body. I noticed the way my body felt when I said the words. Why don’t you have a go? Say out loud, “I’m trying to lose weight.”

How about, “I’m trying to eat healthier.” Or “I’m trying to get fit.” Or “I’m trying to drop a dress size.” What does it feel like in your body? Does it feel expansive or contractive? Does it feel heavy or light? Does it feel easy or hard? It feels exhausting to me!

Restriction Leads To Failure, Do This Instead

You’ve Googled the statistics: 95% of diets fail. Researchers repeatedly tell you that only 5–10% of people who go on diets keep off the excess weight. If you value freedom, then restriction will not work for you.

You can put up with a calorie deficit for a few weeks, stretching it to a few months, but you will begin feeling resentful. The excess weight comes off, but at what cost? You watch your friends and family members have their cake and eat it while you sip your meal replacement shake, faking a smile. It doesn’t have to be this way.

You can have your cake and eat it, too. You can effortlessly manifest your desired body weight, size, and shape. You only need to update your coding: Your subconscious beliefs about food and eating, your body and yourself.  Read more ...

The Key to Changing Your Eating Habits

You were born with perfect eating habits. You naturally sought food when hungry and stopped eating when full. But during childhood, you picked up a variety of messages, often conflicting, about food and eating and your body from family members, teachers, peers, television and magazines.

When and what and how much to eat. What’s acceptable and what isn’t, what’s attractive and what isn’t, and what’s healthy and what isn’t. Your habits are the result of the messages you received as a child. They became internalised as your subconscious beliefs.

Choose Your Treats

Do you reward yourself after exercising with chocolate? Do you reward yourself after a hard day’s work with wine? Or maybe you treat yourself to a desert after being “good” all week?

You’re not alone. Millions of women are doing it. But why do you reward yourself with foods and beverages known to cause inflammation in your body leading to premature ageing and chronic disease?

The roots of this behaviour are in your childhood because you were often rewarded for good behaviour with sweet food and beverages.  Read more ...

Can Weight Loss Be Playful and Fun?

What if the process of healing and transformation was relaxing and enjoyable?

What if the journey to achieving every goal and realising every dream was playful and fun?  Can you begin to imagine that this might be true for you?

What if ditching excess weight, changing your eating and exercise habits, and becoming the most authentic, unapologetic expression of all that you are was effortless and easy?

What's Stopping You From Losing Weight?

You're restricting your calories, right? You're exercising like a mofo, yes? You're keeping a food diary, aren't you?

How can you be doing everything right and still not get the results you want?

Ever since I was a little kid, I have been interested in the study of mind over matter. My ideas were validated when I first picked up a copy of Louise L. Hay's You Can Heal Your Body.

But sustainable weight loss evaded me from age 13 to 47. I tried everything! Read more ...

Misguided Beauty Lessons

The Book of Beauty had a mystical scent that felt intoxicating whenever I opened the gilded-edged pages.

Published in 1961 by the newspaper magnate George Newnes and edited by Eileen Allen, this luxury hardcover book fascinated me. From the age of 7 through to my teens, I spent every summer vacation reading The Book of Beauty from cover to cover.

Little did I know then that I was innocently setting myself up for years of self-inflicted misery.

What's Self-love Got to Do with It?

For years I was secretly filled with self-loathing. My inner critic was vicious. She pointed out every shortcoming. She left no error unnoticed. She hissed in my ear with a constant stream of: You’re not good enough! And you never will be!

When I looked in the mirror, I noticed the frizzy hair that wouldn’t be tamed. The flabby upper arms and thighs. The skin imperfections. The incorrect posture. The out-of-proportion body parts.

I was overweight.

When You're Feeling Fear, Don't Take Action

Lean in. Lean in. Lean into feelings of discomfort.

And B R E A T H E.

In the words of Adriene Mishler (which have become embedded in my psyche after many hours of yoga, and thank you):

Take the slowest, biggest, deepest breath you’ve taken all day.

Unpopular opinion: I don’t believe in “feel the fear and do it anyway.”

When you’re feeling FEAR, you’re not able to think clearly.

The more intense your emotional arousal ... Read more

Welcome 2023  - Getting Cosy with Discomfort

This is a new year, but what does that really mean? Nothing, unless you choose to make it mean something.

What are you choosing to do differently this year?

I'm choosing to lean into my discomfort. Every time I have a go at doing something different, something I haven't tried before, or even something I have tried before but failed at (maybe even multiple times), it feels UNCOMFORTABLE.
